Washington
is located in Litchfield County in the southern foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in northwest Connecticut. It contains the villages of New Preston and Marbledale and the communities of Washington Green, Washington Depot and Woodville. The town of Washington is a scenic, rural town known for its' civic and cultural life. It's a historic town where George Washington (after whom the town is named) traveled many times during the American Revolutionary War. It is said that he slept at the Cogswell Tavern in New Preston in 1781. The town is also known for its' traditional New England-style architecture of 18th and 19th century homes in the Georgian, Greek Revival, Italianate and Shingle styles. Many gorgeous natural areas are near Washington, including Lake Waramaug, which is the second largest natural lake in the state. It offers swimming, fishing, boating, camping and picnicking. The Shepaug River flows through the center of town, and on through a largely undeveloped, scenic river valley. Mount Tom State Park lies to the northeast and is one of Connecticut's oldest state parks. A stone tower at the top of Mount Tom offers fantastic views and is popular among hikers. East Shore Road in the village of New Preston (or Connecticut RT 45) follows alongside Lake Waramaug and is a designated State Scenic Road.

Central Connecticut has a generally temperate, four-season climate. The state lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Connecticut receives some 25 to 60 in of snow each year. The average annual snowfall increases from the coast to the northwestern corner of the State. Temperatures are comparatively uniform across the state. The number of days with minimum temperatures of zero or below average about five in the lower uplands and central valley. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year, with the greatest frequency during the summer months and in the afternoon or evening. The humidity tends to be lowest in the spring and highest in the late summer and early fall.
