New-Preston
is a charming little village located in the town of Washington in the northwest corner of Connecticut. The population is approximately 1,200 residents. Nestled among the trees and hills, and just minutes to Lake Waramaug, New Preston is known for its' traditional New England-style architecture. You'll find homes of the 18th and 19th century built in the Georgian, Greek Revival, Italianate and Shingle styles. In May, 1781, George Washington slept in the Cogswell Tavern, which is still standing on Christian Street in New Preston. There's also several antique mills from the 1800s situated along the East Aspetuck River in New Preston. The river runs through the center of the scenic village and over New Preston Falls. Just west of the village center is the New Preston Hills Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The two main roads through town are U.S. Route 202 and CT Route 45. East Shore Road (or CT RT 45) follows along Lake Waramaug and is a designated State Scenic Road. New Preston is surrounded by a lot of open space with state parks, including Macricostas Preserve, Mt. Bushnell State Park and a 31-acre open space adjacent to the village center. Lake Waramaug offers swimming, fishing, boating (for canoes and car-top boats only) camping and picnicking.

Central Connecticut has a generally temperate, four-season climate. The state lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Connecticut receives some 25 to 60 in of snow each year. The average annual snowfall increases from the coast to the northwestern corner of the State. Temperatures are comparatively uniform across the state. The number of days with minimum temperatures of zero or below average about five in the lower uplands and central valley. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year, with the greatest frequency during the summer months and in the afternoon or evening. The humidity tends to be lowest in the spring and highest in the late summer and early fall.
