Litchfield
is a historic town, located in Litchfield County in northwest Connecticut. It's known as an affluent summer resort town and had a population of 8,316, as of the 2000 census. The boroughs of Bantam and Litchfield are located within the town, as well as the unincorporated villages of Northfield and Milton. Litchfield sits in the scenic northwest hills of Connecticut and offers abundant opportunities for visitors. It was founded in 1719, and by the 1790s had become the leading commercial, social, cultural and legal center of northwestern Connecticut. The town's population grew from 1,366 in 1756 to 4,639 in 1810. Litchfield has several places listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the birthplace of Ethan Allen, the Captain William Bull Tavern, and the Tapping Reeve House and Law School. The Litchfield Historic District includes roughly both sides of North and South Streets, between Gallows Lane and Prospect Street. Litchfield is home to Bantam Lake, the largest natural lake in the state of Connecticut. Recreational activities at the lake include fishing, boating, sailing, paddling, hiking, biking, birding, and ice-fishing. Nearby Topsmead State Park offers hiking, picnicking, sledding, cross-country skiing, and in the month of June, the park is ablaze with color from the state flower - the beautiful Laurel. Litchfield is also host to several special events throughout the year. The Summer Jazz Festival, usually held in August, features jazz legends, as well as new talent, lots of good food, and an arts and crafts show.

Central Connecticut has a generally temperate, four-season climate. The state lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Connecticut receives some 25 to 60 in of snow each year. The average annual snowfall increases from the coast to the northwestern corner of the State. Temperatures are comparatively uniform across the state. The number of days with minimum temperatures of zero or below average about five in the lower uplands and central valley. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year, with the greatest frequency during the summer months and in the afternoon or evening. The humidity tends to be lowest in the spring and highest in the late summer and early fall.
