Lake-Candlewood
is the largest man-made lake in Connecticut and one of the most popular recreational lakes. It's located in Fairfield and Litchfield counties in the western part of the state and is bordered by five towns: Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman. Some of the activities at the lake include swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and golf. Candlewood Lake has approximately 60 miles of shoreline and is surrounded by upscale resorts, marinas and golf courses. The lake is most busy in the summertime when it's beaches are filled with people sunning, children playing in the sand and swimming. Lake Candlewood was formed in the 1920s when a hydroelectric dam was constructed south of the Rocky River's junction with the Housatonic River. Its main purpose is to store water during periods for use when electrical demands are high - mainly during mid-to-late summer heat waves. When the lake was formed, residents in the area were relocated, but some buildings were left standing and farm equipment left behind. Scuba divers can actually go down into the lake and see buildings from that era and follow underwater roads to see artifacts, cars and even covered bridges from that era. Lake Candlewood is approximately 40 feet deep in most places, with some places reaching 80 feet.

Central Connecticut has a generally temperate, four-season climate. The state lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Connecticut receives some 25 to 60 in of snow each year. The average annual snowfall increases from the coast to the northwestern corner of the State. Temperatures are comparatively uniform across the state. The number of days with minimum temperatures of zero or below average about five in the lower uplands and central valley. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year, with the greatest frequency during the summer months and in the afternoon or evening. The humidity tends to be lowest in the spring and highest in the late summer and early fall.
