Bantam-Lake
is the largest natural lake in Connecticut, located in the northwestern part of the state in Litchfield County. Although the lake is located very close to Bantam, Connecticut's town center, the lake is actually in the towns of Litchfield and Morris. This is because the borough of Bantam is actually situated within the town of Litchfield. Much of the land at the northern end of the lake, including the peninsula of Marsh Point, is protected by White Memorial Foundation. This area is home to a wide variety of bird species. You can expect to see osprey, mute swan, ducks, marsh birds, and many others. Bantam Lake is 930 acres, with a maximum depth of 23 feet. It was a favorite camping ground of the Pootatuck Native American tribe, and the large number of arrowheads found at the north end of the lake suggest that frequent skirmishes with the invading Mohawks took place in the area. Bantam Lake is popular for sailing and also offers some of the best freshwater fishing in Connecticut. The main fish species in the lake are Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Yellow and White Perch, Sunfish, and Brown Bullhead. Other activities at Bantam Lake include ice boating and ice fishing in the wintertime, paddling, swimming, water-skiing, picnicking and hiking around the lake. The nearby town of Litchfield is known as an affluent summer resort and is home to approximately 8,500 residents.

Central Connecticut has a generally temperate, four-season climate. The state lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Connecticut receives some 25 to 60 in of snow each year. The average annual snowfall increases from the coast to the northwestern corner of the State. Temperatures are comparatively uniform across the state. The number of days with minimum temperatures of zero or below average about five in the lower uplands and central valley. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year, with the greatest frequency during the summer months and in the afternoon or evening. The humidity tends to be lowest in the spring and highest in the late summer and early fall.
