Niantic
is a village located in the town of East Lyme on the Long Island Sound in south-eastern Connecticut. In the 2000 census, the population was 3,085. The village is home to the Niantic Bay Yacht Club, which organizes sailboat races on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoon. It's also a popular place for swimming, fishing and boating. Many people refer to the whole town of East Lyme as "Niantic," because this is the beach side of town that's very popular with tourists. The population of Niantic almost doubles during the summer season. Flanders is another village located within East Lyme, and it's known as the quiet side of town, filled with apple orchards and forest. The village of Niantic also includes the beach communities of Attawan Beach, Black Point, Crescent Beach, Giants Neck Beach, Giants Neck Heights, Oak Grove Beach, Old Black Point, Pine Grove, and Saunders Point. Aside from tourism, the main industry in town is fishing, so lots of great seafood restaurants can be found here. Other attractions include the Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut and Rocky Neck State Park, which offers swimming, fishing, camping and picnicking. Rocky Neck State Park is also known for its sandbar, where at low tide, visitors may walk out to it. The Niantic Bay Boardwalk is accessed from the town's Hole-in-the-Wall Beach and is a great place to walk and enjoy the views. There's also lots of great wooded hiking trails in Niantic, which are especially popular during spring and fall, when it's free of bugs and mosquitoes.

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
