Old-Saybrook
is located in Middlesex County in south-central Connecticut. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,242. The town sits where the Connecticut River meets the Long Island Sound. The village dates to 1624 when Dutch settlers first established a trading post and factory at the site of present day Old Saybrook. A few years later, a company of English Puritans, led by John Winthrop and Viscount Saye and Sele and Lord Brook, erected a fort to guard the river entrance. Old Saybrook is a picturesque city with a Main Street filled with eclectic shops, restaurants and a beautiful shoreline, marinas and two public beaches. Other outdoor recreational opportunities include a state-owned boat launching area, a mini-golf course and several lovely parks. Just a few miles away are casinos, theater, the quaint seaside village of Mystic and the Mystic Seaport & Aquarium. Old Saybrook is filled with historic attractions, including the old Black Horse Tavern, built in 1712 by John Burrows and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just a few of the other places of historic interest include the Old Saybrook South Green, the Lynde Point Lighthouse, the Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse, James Pharmacy and several historic homes. Old Saybrook is about 100 miles from Boston and only 45 miles from Hartford. An Amtrak railroad station is in town with frequent trips to New Haven, New York and Boston.

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
