Essex
is a gleaming, historic seaside village located in Middlesex County in southern Connecticut. The population is approximately 6,500. Essex is made up of three villages: Essex Village, Centerbrook and Ivoryton. Centerbrook is the fertile, agricultural area of town and was the center of town until the Revolutionary War. Many historic farmhouses remain in this area, and it's also home to the Congregational Church, which is the oldest existing church in Middlesex County. Essex Village, originally known as Potapoug Point has many Federal-style homes and buildings, erected between 1790 and 1820. The part of the town called Ivoryton came to be as the construction of wooden sailing ships faded and the ivory and piano parts industry took over. Homes in this area of town were mostly built after the Civil War. East Main Street in Ivoryton is called Victorian Row. The main attraction in Essex is the Essex Stream Train excursion. The train takes visitors on a ride from Essex to Deep River, where they then board the Becky Thatcher Riverboat, which then takes them up to the Haddam area. This is an especially gorgeous ride during autumn with the changing of the leaves. Other attractions in town include the Essex Art Gallery, the Ivoryton Playhouse and the Connecticut River Museum. Essex also hosts an annual Groundhog Day Parade, and a "Loser's Day Parade," which celebrates the 1814 burning of 29 ships in Essex harbor during a raid by British marines.

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
