New-London
is a colorful seaport city located at the mouth of the Thames River in southeastern Connecticut. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 27,620. The entire Norwich-New London metropolitan area has a population of over 250,000. The city of New London began as a major whaling port, then a shipping and manufacturing center. Today, it's more well-known for its beautiful colleges, cultural scene and recreational waterfront facilities. The city is home to Connecticut College, Mitchell College, The Williams School and the United States Coast Guard Academy. In addition, New London Harbor is home port to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Chinook and the Coast Guard's tall ship Eagle. Founded in 1646, it's one of the country's oldest cities and offers self-guided walking tours of its historic streets that are lined with 18th and 19th century homes and buildings. New London also has unique specialty shops, fine restaurants of every type of food imaginable, art galleries and museums. Many people love visiting to simply stroll the waterfront and soak up the maritime atmosphere. Public beaches include Greens Harbor Beach and Ocean Beach Park, which was voted one of the best beaches by National Geographic. Just a few of the features at Ocean Beach Park include a boardwalk, playground, a nature trail, picnic area, gift shop, amusement rides, and arcade and miniature golf. You'll never run out of things to do at New London - a city that has something for everyone.

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
