Groton-Long-Point
is summer resort subdivision of the town of Groton, located on the Long Island Sound in New London County, Connecticut. The full-time population of Groton Long Point is less than 1,000. The town of Groton's population is approximately 40,000. Since Groton Long Point is mainly a summer resort, very few people are full-time residents. Also, just as the population increases during the summer months, it's also more crowded on summer weekends compared to summer weekdays. The area has been administered by the Groton Long Point Association since 1921 by an act of the Connecticut Legislature. This act "enabled seasonal residents to tax and issue bonds to provide services independent of the town of Groton." It has the same governmental powers as a borough. The summer season in Groton Long Point runs approximately from mid-June to mid-September. Here, summer cottages sit side by side along the beach, U.S. flags blowing in the sea breeze, sailboats dot the water as children play in the sand - it makes a very colorful picture. The Groton Long Point Yacht Club runs many classes for children, including swimming, sailing, tennis lessons and more. Much like a summer camp, they also organize events such as dances, movies and scavenger hunts for children; concerts (at nearby Esker Point,) dances, and fireworks for adults. Most of the properties on Groton Long Point are privately owned, but summer vacation rentals are also available.

Groton Long Point Weather & Climate

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
