Westbrook is a quiet community located in Middlesex County in southern Connecticut on the Long Island Sound. The population is around 6,300. The town of Westbrook is bordered by Old Saybrook, Essex and the town of Clinton. The town is anchored to the east and west by two rivers; the Patchogue and the Menunketesuck. Westbrook was settled in 1638 as a part of Saybrook Plantation. It was called Pochaug, or Patchogue and renamed Westbrook in 1810. The town early days were dedicated to shipbuilding until the arrival of steamship and later the railroad, which opened the community to other businesses and visitors. Westbrook is known as home of the "American Turtle," the first ever submarine. In 1776, Westbrook native, David Bushnell, attended Yale College and during his time there, he invented the submarine and brought it back to Saybrook to test it. The wood and steel "American Turtle" was a hand-powered one-man ship that submerged when its ballast tanks were filled with water. It's considered the forerunner of today's modern submarines. Westbrook Weather & Climate

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
