Killingworth
is a small, rural town located in Middlesex County in south-central Connecticut. It has a population of approximately 6,000 residents. Killingworth was first settled in 1663 and named "Kenilworth." It was only through misspellings of the name over the years that it became changed to Killingworth, which was used exclusively for the town after around 1707. An interesting, but little known fact, is that the town of Killingworth was actually the birthplace of what would eventually become Yale University. In the late 17th century, the Reverend Abraham Pierson, who was the college's first President, taught some of the very first classes in his Killingworth home. In 1701, the college's first official home was built in Old Saybrook, on the peninsula of Saybrook Point. Eventually Yale University was moved to its' present-day home in New Haven. Another interesting fact for history buffs about Killingworth: it's near the home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Toms Cabin. It's said, by locals, to be just one of the haunted places you can visit in the area. Killingworth is full of scenic countryside with unlimited recreational opportunities. Fall is an especially beautiful time to visit when you may choose wander the countryside to view the stunning fall foliage. Annual festivals in the area include the Chrysanthemum Festival in Bristol, and the Apple Harvest festival, both take place in the fall. For a day of shopping and fine dining, the city of Hartford is an easy day trip from Killingworth.

South-Central Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and humid continental. The pertinent characteristics of Connecticut's climate are: equal distribution of precipitation among the four seasons, large ranges of temperature both daily and annually, and considerable diversity of the weather over short periods of time. A large number of storm centers and air-mass fronts pass near or over Connecticut during a year. A unique type of air mass results in a severe winter storm in this area known as "northeasters". They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter. Heavy or dense fog is observed on an average of about 25 days per year in both coastal and inland sections.
