Ledyard
is located in New London County in southeast Connecticut along the Thames River. The town is named for Colonel William Ledyard, a Revolutionary War soldier who was killed by his own saber after surrendering to the British at the end of the Battle of Groton Heights. The population of Ledyard is approximately 15,000. Located within Ledyard is a village known as Gales Ferry, which has its' own separate zip code. Gales Ferry sits along the eastern bank of the Thames River and developed as a result of it being the site of a ferry that went to the town of Uncasville. Much of the original settlement has been preserved in two separate historic districts. The two districts each contain several farmstead buildings from the late 18th and early 19th century that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the town of Ledyard is a mostly rural, suburban community with quiet, peaceful neighborhoods. Attractions include Foxwood include one of the largest casinos in the world, the Connecticut Wine Trail, golf courses and beaches. Colonel Ledyard Park is a 131-acre forested park that contains a 1.5 mile hiking trail, picnic facilities, tennis courts and ball fields. The park trail is beautiful and is enhanced by stone walls, brooks all within a forest setting. The park is located between Route 117 and Colonel Ledyard Highway.

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
