Norwich
is located in New London County in east-central Connecticut. As of the 2010 census, the population was 40,493. Known as "The Rose of New England," three rivers flow into the city and form its harbor, from which the Thames River then flows south to Long Island Sound. The three rivers in Norwich are the Yantic, the Shetucket and the Quinebaug. Norwich was founded in 1659 from land purchased from the Mohegan Native American tribe. It became one of the mill towns of New England. Today, Norwich is well-known for being home to Mohegan Park, home to The Rose Garden, which contains over 100 varieties of roses. The park also offers numerous hiking trails, a swimming beach, picnic facilities and grills, basketball courts and playgrounds. It's also a popular site for nature photographers due to its beautiful trails and variety of flora and fauna. The park contains Spaulding Pond and The Skating Pond. In 1963, a crack in the dam at Spaulding Pond caused the waters to burst forth into the city, causing the Great Flood of Norwich. Streets, homes and cars were flooded and a mill collapsed, causing several deaths. Another major attraction in the city of Norwich is the Slater Memorial Museum. This museum contains art from five different continents that is housed in a Romanesque Revival-style building, designed by Worcester architect Stephen Earle. Dedicated in 1886, the building features stained glass windows, marble mosaics, intricate pressed brick architectural details, and carved oak, chestnut and cherry moldings. The Converse Art Gallery is located adjacent to the museum.

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
