East-Haddam
is a historical town located in Middlesex County in south-central Connecticut. The population is approximately 8,500. The land, which is now the towns of East Haddam and Haddam, was purchased from the Native American Indians in 1662 for thirty coats - the equivalence of approximately $100. Layout of highways in the area began in 1669, and ferry service across the Connecticut River started in 1695 and continued until the completion of the swing bridge in 1913 (the largest such bridge in the world.) Revolutionary War hero, Nathan Hale, taught school here during the winter of 1773-1774, and the schoolhouse where he taught is still standing, located at Hopyard State Park off Route 82. The population of the town declined to around 2,000 residents by 1930. However, several tourist attractions, including Lake Hayward and the castle home built in 1914 by actor William Gillette, began to draw visitors and the town continue to grow over the next fifty years. Today, popular recreational spots include Devil's Hopyard State Park and Lake Hayward, a 1.5-mile long spring-fed lake in the northern section of town. Activities include hiking, fishing, picnicking, camping, biking and bird watching. There are two excellent eagle viewing sites in the town; along the Connecticut River at the Town Office parking lot and near Riverhouse, overlooking the north side of the East Haddam Bridge.

Southeast Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and a humid continental. Although the seasonal extremes are slightly moderated by Long Island Sound, the primary weather pattern flow is offshore, from the colder landmasses to the north and west. A large number of air-mass fronts pass over this region during a year: cold, dry air pouring down from sub arctic North America, warm, moist air streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cool, damp air moving in from the North Atlantic. Thunderstorms occur on an average of 20 to 30 days per year. Aside from infrequent tornadoes and hurricanes, coastal storms or "northeasters" are the most serious weather hazard in Connecticut. They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter.
