Canterbury
is located in Windham County in the northeast corner of Connecticut. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,132. Canterbury was first settled in 1680 and named Peagscomsuck. In 1703, it became the town of Canterbury. The village sits in what is called "The Quiet Corner" of Connecticut - an area filled with history, quaint businesses and tradespeople and gorgeous views. In 1832, a Quaker schoolteacher named Prudence Crandall, created controversy when she opened a school for black girls in the town of Canterbury. As a result, the Connecticut General Assembly passed the Black Law which prohibited the education of black children from out of state. Crandall persisted in teaching, however, and she was briefly jailed in 1832. Mobs eventually forced the closure of the school and Prudence Crandall married and moved out of state. Connecticut repealed the Black Law in 1838. In 1866, the state recognized Crandall with a small pension, which was just four years before her death. The school for black girls still stands in Canterbury, and currently serves as the Prudence Crandall Museum. The Canterbury Center Historic District includes buildings in the Colonial, Federal and other architectural styles. Other historic places of interest include the Captain John Clark House, the Jonathan Wheeler House, the Prudence Crandall House, and the Westminster Congregational Church.

Northeast Connecticut has four seasons that lie within the transition zone of humid subtropical and humid continental. The pertinent characteristics of Connecticut's climate are: equal distribution of precipitation among the four seasons, large ranges of temperature both daily and annually, and considerable diversity of the weather over short periods of time. Heavy or dense fog is observed on an average of about 25 days per year in both coastal and inland sections. Humidity tends to be lowest in the spring and highest in the late summer. There is a difference of about 6 °F. in mean annual temperature from north to south of the State. The greater contrast of temperature occurs during the winter season.
