Wallingford
is located in New Haven County in south-central Connecticut. The town has a population of approximately 45,000 and is home to Choate Rosemary Hall, a private, college-preparatory, co-ed boarding school. The town of Wallingford was founded in 1667 along the Quinnipiac River. The town's first major road called the "long highway" stretched along the ridge of a hill above a sandy plain. Today, this is Main Street in the city of Wallingford. There are several places of historical interest in the town. The Nehemiah Royce House, also called the Washington Elm House, is a historic home that was twice visited by President George Washington. The first visit was in 1775 on his way to take command of the Continental Army in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and again in 1789 when he gave a speech to the townspeople of Wallingford. The Center Tree Cemetery dates to 1670, and contains the graves of early settlers, as well as a 300-year-old-tomb that contains the remains of Thomas Yale, brother of the founder of Yale University, and Joseph Benham, whose daughter was the last person in New England to be tried for witchcraft. Other nearby attractions include the world-famous pizza restaurants of New Haven and Louis' Lunch, known for their hamburger and steak sandwiches. Also, the Connecticut Children's Museum, Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Eli Whitney Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery and Artspace.

South-Central Connecticut lies within the transition zone of humid subtropical and humid continental. The pertinent characteristics of Connecticut's climate are: equal distribution of precipitation among the four seasons, large ranges of temperature both daily and annually, and considerable diversity of the weather over short periods of time. A large number of storm centers and air-mass fronts pass near or over Connecticut during a year. A unique type of air mass results in a severe winter storm in this area known as "northeasters". They generate very strong winds and heavy rain and produce the greatest snowstorms in the winter. Heavy or dense fog is observed on an average of about 25 days per year in both coastal and inland sections.
